He is an expert in micro biology and bacteriology with a similar career as Alice filling all the gaps she has. Although he voluntary works for the CDC he lacks the dedication. He feels much better inside a closed laboratory than on fieldwork. His talent and specialized knowledge make up for this.

In my opinion he is one of those guys who do not want to be part of a mission like this but do not find the courage to say no - or think that they would act immoral if they would do so.
